I have had a minor stroke the past 6 months (completely recovered) and I have controlled type II diabetes. Alc between 6-7 on oral meds.

I am in my mid 60's

Any chance to get LTC insurance? Or am I out of luck?

Harley,

There are only a few companies that will consider anyone with a history of a stroke and they all require a waiting period of a minimum of 12 months.

Complicating matters is your diagnosis of diabetes. I'm not sure if any company will offer you coverage.

A combination of a stroke and diabetes, (no matter how recovered you are from the stroke and no matter how well controlled your diabetes is) is usually an automatic decline.

I suggest you contact an independent broker, one who represents a number of carriers to find out your insurability.

You can find an agent/broker in your state by going to the American Association of LTC insurance website.

Good luck,
Arthur

Harley,

Since your a1c is good, you might be able to get approved by one of the top LTC insurers 24 months after the date of the minor stroke.

Arthur is correct that a history of stroke/mini-stroke is automatically declined by some LTC insurers.

The combination of a stroke/mini-stroke with diabetes is automatically declined by most LTC insurers.

But, you may be able to get approved 24 months after the stroke as long as you have no residual effects from the stroke and the diabetes is well-controlled.
