Anyone have thoughts with 2 years vs 3 when it cones to a coverage period. I understand it's hard for one to tell me the answer, just wanted to get thoughts from people. I have a 70 father, igood health, just trying to determine to do 2 vs 3 with John Hancock.

3 better than 2. Compare Genworth Classic Select rates with John Hancock. Also Metlife Value Plan. Be sure you understand the differencess in the home care benefits between the three. Let us know what you decide. Also be sure you understand Calendar day elimination versus service day elimination. Prudential evolution plan might be a good choice also. Depends on his total health situation. Talk with a LTCI professional that represents all these companies. Compare.

Thanks bill, whatnis the diff between those two elms, everything I've been looking ar has been a 90 day elimination period, have not cone across those two terms. From the comparisons I've done it seems like jh has the best annual rates for my father, not cheap, but he's 70 so I guess it's to be expected.

Doing comparisons online without the help of a long term care insurance professional can be problamatic. The premiums can differ greatly within one company depending on what underwriting class the applicant ends up with. Remember, medical underwriting is based on the facts, not what you think. Most of the time, it is a good idea to discuss any possible underwriting issues with the underwriters before applying. This is not always 100% accurate, but it sure beats guessing at it. Hancock may have the "best rates", but that could change after underwriting does their thing. Also, "rates" are only a beginning benchmark. How and what one company pays for can vary between policies. Definitions can vary, etc.

Well, I think duhaas has done his homework and is in the competitve range.

My software is confirming that John Hancock is the second most competitvely priced company assuming Preferred rates based upon $4500/mo., 2 years or 3 years, 5% compound, and a 90 day waiting period.

2 years

Genworth Classic Select $3050.89
John Hancock $3327.75

3 years

Genworth $3968.64
John Hancock $4169.25

The curveball is Met Life though. As many of us know, Met Life is expensive if one opts to buy a 5% compound inflation factor. Yet, Met Life is very competitive for a 70 year old applicant on its base rates. For approximately the same premium above, duhaas could buy a current monthly benefit of somewhere between $8400 and $8700 with Met Life, rather than $4500/5% compound with GE or JH. Thus, for comparable premium Met Life would be well ahead of John Hancock and Genworth in benefits through age 84.

Re: the initial question, I also would go 3 years vs. 2 years with any of the companies.
