My mother suffered a bad stroke in October '05 and ended up with left side paralysis with some movement of her left leg ocassionally. She is currently in a Nursing home in the middle of nowhere Texas. My step-father is caring for her, but medicare and blue-cross are refusing to continue coverage for her. I think the home costs about 150-200 a day, but we don't want to spend down everything they own. Progress on her recovery is very slow and may not improve much. Is there much choice at this point other than to spend down to get Medecaid?

Thanks,

If you haven't already, you really need to talk to an elder law attorney as soon as possible. They'll be able to help you work the system to your best benefit, and preserve what you can. It will cost a few hundred dollars, but trying to do this on your own will cost a lot more. Good luck.
